The NASA GeneLab for High Schools (GL4HS) is a virtual, intensive training program for rising high school juniors and seniors, sponsored by NASA's Ames Research Center. The program immerses students in space life sciences with a specific focus on omics-based bioinformatics research and computational biology. Students learn the science of collecting and analyzing complex biological data, such as genetic codes, and how spaceflight affects biological systems. The program provides hands-on experience in NASA space biology research, including bioinformatics and computational biology methods and techniques to analyze omics data. Participants develop a competitive team experimental proposal based on analysis of data from the GeneLab Data Repository and gain formal oral presentation skills. Students also network with guest lecturers, including university professors and industry experts. The program aims to equip students with valuable knowledge and skills for NASA's space biology research and to inspire the next generation of scientists.
Most of the course materials are asynchronous and can be completed at the student's own pace, with optional open office hours available. The optional Capstone Project requires participation in a synchronous (live) 3-hour session for a mandatory Capstone Orientation on the first day.
The ideal student is a rising high school junior or senior with a passion for learning and space biology, interested in bioinformatics and computational biology, and eager to engage with real NASA research data.
